Puppy Shopping List

We know it can be overwhelming on the products to buy for your new puppy. The following are our favourites:

  1. Kennel Training - use a crate with a divider for a puppy which prefers a smaller space; Global Pet Foods. The Kong brand and Petmate brand are good options. We find the crates at Costco not as sturdy.

  2. Food Bowls - Bowls that are elevated promote healthier digestion for your puppy as well as the adult dog. Homesense is a good source as well as all the pet stores.

  3. Dog Food - Always check with your Vet for recommendations. We currently use royal canin .

  4. Comfort Items - We highly recommend a sound machine located in the puppy sleeping area. It helps the transition to the puppy’s new home. Amazon is a good source.

    • The Snuggle Puppy mimics the mother’s heartbeat and can hold a heat pack.

    • Nylabone keys - red, green, and blue. You can put them in the fridge or freezer and use when the your puppy is teething.

    • Tender Tuffs

    • Kong - To stuff iwth puppy food, cheese whiz, peanut butter or cottage cheese on top, then put in freezer. We include a Kong in our take home kit.

    • Collars - You will want to have a collar with a clip that can be broken if needed. Our puppy kit includes a Foxy Hound collar.

    • Leashes - We do not recommend the retractable leashes. Leather leashes are very durable, but the fabric ones are also good. Get one that is comfortable to loop around your wrist. The shorter leashes are better for puppy training.

    • Harness - We highly recommend a harness which restrains the dog’s body instead of all the strain on the dog’s neck. The Kong brand is very durable. Best to have the harness tested with your puppy at the pet store. Consider an adjustable harness.

    • Gorilla Rocks - We have these for our dogs which love them; especially as the puppy is a bit older. Global Pet Foods sells them.

    • Stuffless Toys - These are the best options for plush toys, as puppies tend to chew apart the toys. Skinnez brand of stuffless toys work good. In general, we find the best prices on toys are at Petsmart, Homesense, Winners and Marshalls. Global Pet Foods have occasional good deals, but tend to be more expensive

  5. Dog Beds - Costco round beds are the best deal. We take the cover off the bed and put two large garbage bags over the bed, then replace the cover, This way, you can remove the cover and wash it when the puppy has an accident. Thus make sure the cover is removable when you purchasing this item.

  6. Bell - Many families like to get a bell to do their puppy training. Check the youtube video on bell training.

  7. Collars - You will want to have a collar with a clip that can be broken if needed.

  8. Leashes - We do not recommend the retractable leashes. Leather leashes are very durable, but the fabric ones are also good. Get one that is comfortable to loop around your wrist. The shorter leashes are better for puppy training.

  9. Harness - We highly recommend a harness which restrains the dog’s body instead of all the strain on the dog’s neck. The Kong brand is very durable. Best to have the harness tested with your puppy at the pet store. Consider an adjustable harness.

  10. Grooming Supplies - Slicker brush is good, and can be purchased at any pet store. The Slicker brush will allow your to get to the base of the furs where it mats the most, and the brush is just to fluff.

  11. Toothbrush - Reommend brushing your dog’s teeth a few times per week. (best every day). Doggie tooth paste is sold at Walmart, pet stores and at your Vet.

  12. Poop Bags - The best deal is at Costco.

The above are mere suggestions that work for us. Every pet owner may find items that work best for them, If you have any questions about a product, then please message us if you would like our opinion.
